History of Mt Morris Twp Fire

The first organized fire service was formed in the village of Mt Morris in 1869. The department had fifteen volunteers, and a hand drawn fire apparatus for pumping water. Three persons on side of apparatus pumped the water. In 1947 a group of community Leaders, mostly members of the Beecher Men's Club, whose leader was Chester Blake, spearheaded a drive to provide fire service to this area. In 1948, Beecher Fire Dept was formed, and Mt Morris Twp Station 1 knows as Central Fire. Rapid growth in the township required another station near the Pierson Road corridor. In 1967, a new fire station was opened on Jennings Road and was designated as Station 2 .They had their own staff officers, but all were accountable to Chief Herriman. In 1973, the demands upon Station 2 made it clear that they needed their own Fire Chief to help facilitate the demand for for fire service in this area. When Station 2 went on their own Harold,” Jack" Reese was appointed as there Fire Chief. Jack Reese held this position until 1991.Then Chief Tim Hunt became the Chief and after his retirement Chief Rick Johnson became the Chief of the Station. Now Mt Morris Twp has combined all three of there fire stations under one Chief.Chief Don Welch has became the townships first part time administrative chief for the township. The Chief's that are currently in place at station #1 Chief Scott Hillerman, station # 2 Chief Rick Johnson and station #3 Chief Steve {BO} Ricardson have now became the station chief's. This is a big change for all of us, but we all hope that we will be able to provide better fire services for the residents of Mt Morris Township.
